Cats hate water – this is a well-known truth. Most purrs can hardly tolerate water procedures: someone indulgently endures them out of love for their man, and someone who has less patience does behave aggressively. Well, to climb into the water of your own free will is completely unthinkable! “Why is all this stress needed? – Probably, this is what our beloved purrs argue. – Cats are famous cleaners, but you can put yourself in order in a more pleasant way! Licking is our everything! ” We are now talking about domestic cats, but among their wild counterparts, there are also almost no lovers of swimming. If a wild cat happens to run into the need to enter a river or lake, she will do so with undisguised disgust.

However, among cats, there is a real exception to this rule – a wild wyvern fishing cat. This “kitty” is also called speckled or fish cat. She is much larger than her domestic tribesmen: the weight of males can reach 15 kg! Cats weigh less – 6-7 kg. The body length is 96-120 cm, and the height at the withers is 38-40 cm. The canine of an adult cat reaches 3 cm in length, its claws are 1.5-2 cm.

The cat-fisher is strong, muscular, very fast and agile. An interesting feature: there are membranes between the fingers of the paws of the viverra cat – almost like a frog, for example. With their help, she swims, raking webbed feet, like flippers. And the membranes help to keep the fish caught – yes, our beauty not only swims, but she also hunts, or rather, fishes. Therefore, she was called a cat fisherman.

The second feature is the special structure of the nostrils, which allows the Viverra cat to hold its breath and dive underwater. They have practically no nose bridge, their nose is very wide and large, the widest among all cats.

The habitat of the cat-fisherman in wildlife is Southeast Asia: Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, as well as some parts of Sri Lanka, southern India, and the Indonesian islands. This region is rich in tropical and subtropical forests and flat, slowly flowing rivers, mangrove swamps, as well as small lakes. Just a paradise for a floating cat!

Viverra cat-fisher is very careful, avoids meeting with a person and, if possible, will not go into conflict, but can always stand up for herself. Local residents tell many stories about fishermen who went into the settlements, were not afraid of anyone and easily dispersed a pack of dogs.

However, you can meet this amazing animal in nature less and less …

Nowadays, these cats are successfully bred in nurseries and zoos and even kept as pets. Although such an incredible and wild beast requires special conditions: he needs space and special food. Well, water, of course – these cats love swimming.
